Madre De Yúcahu
Madre de Yúcahu depicts the birth of Yúcahu, a major deity in the Taíno pantheon associated with agriculture, the sea, and the life-giving cassava (yuca) crop. His mother, Atabey, is a powerful deity associated with the Earth, fresh water, fertility, and motherhood. She conceived and gave birth to Yúcahu and his twin brother, Guacar (not present in painting), without a male counterpart. As a primordial mother figure, Atabey can be understood as a matriarchal presence within the Taíno pantheon.
The artwork portrays Atabey raising the newborn Yúcahu above her head beneath a full moon, as two waves of water rise between them symbolizing birth, water, fertility, and the life-giving forces embodied by mother and son.
