Shorakkopoch Rock:

The Myth of Manhattan's Sale

Shorakkopoch Rock commemorates the disputed 1626 “sale” of Manhattan.

Although Dutch records claimed the island was purchased, no deed documenting the transaction has been found. Lenape perspectives challenge the idea of a permanent sale, describing exchanges that permitted shared use of land rather than surrendering ownership. European colonization subsequently brought warfare, forced displacement, and the destruction of Indigenous communities and their environment.

The Lenape people continue to exist today.
